Universities Caught in the AI Crossfire: Beloved by Students, Feared by Faculty

April 8, 2025
NORDTEK roundtable discussion on using AI in engineering education gathered teaching experts and practitioners around the NORDTEK countries to discuss how the emergence of AI tools have changes and is going to reshape engineering education in universities.

Here are some key takeaways from the hour-long discussion can provoke and inspire your own thinking:

  • The universities have witnessed the rise of pen and paper or oral exams.
  • Students like using Large Language Models (LLMs) but they are disappointed if they are graded by LLMs.
  • LLMs do not seem to reduce the workload of teachers: grading becomes more difficult and time consuming, not less
  • When training the teaching staff, we should address the emotional side of training: many teachers feel uncomfortable or even scared and this should be explicitly addressed by trainers.
  • Writing your thesis (or any other written coursework) is a part of process, not just formalising your work: writing changes the writer’s thoughts and helps to develop ideas. Therefore, writing the thesis cannot be left for LLMs in the future.
